The Lead-Free Families program through Penn Medicine Lancaster General Health aims to eliminate childhood lead poisoning in Lancaster County. It is the first comprehensive childhood lead poisoning prevention program in the United States to be initially funded entirely by a health system and addresses lead from both an environmental and health perspective.
The program tracks positive outcomes through comprehensive case management which conducts follow-up tests to evaluate lead levels of individuals living in these homes. As of June 2024, over 350 children with elevated lead levels joined the program and 64% showed a lower blood lead level after receiving education and living in homes where remediation projects were completed. The Lead-Free Families program recently celebrated completing over 700 lead safe homes and is excited to add more homes to this list in the future.
The community also has access to expanded home restoration services through their Healthy Homes program. This offering evaluates health factors in a home including dampness and mold growth, asbestos, radon, electrical hazards and more.
