The Penn Medicine Lancaster General Health Research Institute is currently conducting a special study aimed at identifying provider burnout and improving well-being. This randomized research study assigns physicians, advanced practice providers and psychologists across the health system to one of two groups and also incorporates the use of an Oura Ring to analyze physiological well-being, sleep and mental health. The goal of the project is to mitigate or reverse initial symptoms of clinician burnout with the SKY Breathwork program at a statistically significant difference as compared to the control. This study is a collaborative effort between Penn Medicine and Massachusetts General Hospital, which are the only two organizations in the country currently participating in the project.
The Research Institute team plans to use the survey data to create a strategic plan that addresses clinician burnout, absenteeism and provider retention for an improved patient experience and quality of care. There are currently conversations around creating a provider wellness center with holistic therapy treatments to help improve access to well-being resources moving forward. There is also discussion around expanding the study to all clinicians including nurses, physical therapists and pharmacists in the future.
